Mr. Palen, a striking man with charming manners, loved his daughter to distraction, in a way his nervous, striving wife never could. Claire is only nine when her father is found to have a degenerative brain disorder that slowly transforms him, dooming him to a second childhood. He doesn't even recognize his daughter on the day he dies. As Claire grows older, she begins to doubt whether she will ever again find a trusting love. She worships, more than is healthy, the memory of her father. Her mother gives Claire neither love nor support. Too often cold and without sympathy for Claire's unhappiness, Mrs. Palen is jealous of Claire's beauty and the exclusive devotion her father had shown her. Claire, in her turn, is blind to her own beauty and intelligence, dwelling on her mother's cultural achievements and power over others. Claire is finally able to break away from her mother's domination when she marries a pilot during World War II. For a time she is ecstatic, but not long after they are married he is reported killed in a plane crash in France. Refusing to accept his death, Claire begins to search for him putting everything else aside: her business, her health, even her sanity. She finds a man she desperately wants to believe is her husband and takes him home, only to be deserted. Claire wants to relive the past, and it is only after she has despaired and suffered that she begins to have hope in the present.
